In 2007, the community of Kiwaska, Nicaragua and Project Schoolhouse collaborated to construct a new three-room school. Secure, well lit, and well ventilated, the new school was an immense improvement over the previous 200 sq ft wooden building they had been using for the past 15 years.
This project presented considerable technical challenges due to it remote location in the autonomous region in Nicaragua. Materials had to be transported across the giant Tuma river and then along a hand built road into the community. Many of the materials were transported by horse and mule as well as by hand.
The project took six months to complete and now houses the community’s 80 students as well as adult students who are taking advantage of the opportunity to learn to read.
