In 2013, the community of Sector Zamora, Nicaragua and Project Schoolhouse collaborated to construct a new two-room school. The previous school was built from wooden planks and had a palm frond roof that leaked severely. One member of the community remarked that at least the holes in the roof let in enough light to read by. Nearly 50 students crammed into the 200 sq ft structure which became muddy whenever it would rain.
The new school is secure, dry, and well lit. It has running water, a kitchen, and a space for the kids to eat lunch. It is a vastly superior learning environment and since its construction adult literacy classes have spontaneously begun.
